Pre Employment Courses & University Study
Pre-Trade Course
The National Certificate in Electricity Supply Level 2 is a full-time course designed specifically for the electricity supply industry. It is the initial trade qualification that leads to Level 3 and 4 Certificates, and is a great way to prepare for apprenticeships in the industry. All pre-trade courses include opportunities for work experience.
Pre-trade courses are held in:
- Christchurch at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology
- Hamilton at the Waikato Institute of Technology
- Auckland at the Manukau Institute of Technology.
The pre-trade course covers workshop practices, electrical knowledge, safe working practices, mechanical fundamentals and specific electricity supply industry skills. The courses also provide students with marketable skills to help them gain apprenticeships in the industry.
University Study
Completing a university degree will allow you to apply for a variety of jobs within the electricity supply industry.
Bachelor of Engineering
This is a four-year programme which combines academic and practical training, leading to registration as a professional engineer. The degree will enable you to embark on a wide range of careers. These careers include design, consulting, project management, management, product development and research in an extensive range of areas such as chemical, civil, electrical, electronic, mechanical and computer engineering, mechatronics and natural resources. The entrance qualifications for New Zealand universities vary, so check each university's entrance criteria for their Bachelor of Engineering degree.
Bachelor of Engineering Technology
This is a three-year degree for people wishing to become engineering technologists. The degree is offered at a number of polytechnics and some universities around the country and has a practical focus. There is a variety of specialisations available.
Other Undergraduate Degrees
There are a number of different degree qualifications which would enhance your opportunities for a career in marketing, human resources, operations management, accountancy, energy trading and management. Entry requirements depend both on the university and programme selected.
