Gateway is a Tertiary Education Commission funded programme for senior secondary school students. It provides opportunities for them to participate in learning in real workplaces and have that learning integrated with their wider courses of study. This will help them explore in a very practical way, the career path that they are interested in.

The units in ESITO's Gateway programme have been chosen because they reflect work practices and technical principles that relate to the electricity supply industry. As such, they are a solid foundation for students who wish to pursue a career in the industry. 

It is possible to do an Electrically focussed Gateway with ESITO using the below units. You can also do a work placement and a Business Administration/Contact Centre focussed Gateway.

 ESITO’s Gateway Programme comprises the following unit standards.

4249	Demonstrate care and timeliness as an employee (Level 1, 3 credits)
10780	Complete a work experience placement (Level 1, 2 credits)
3503	Participate in a team or group to complete routine tasks (Level 1, 2 credits)
1299 (NEW)	Be assertive in a range of specified situations (Level 2, 4 credits)
5911	Explain basic magnetism and electromagnetism as applied to the electrotechnology industry (Level 1, 1 credit)
6626	Demonstrate knowledge of electrical and electronic components (Level 2, 3 credits)
10507 (NEW)	Use persoanl protection equipment within an electricity network environment (Level 2, 4 credits)

Prerequisites prior to a work placement are:

6401	Provide first aid (Level 2, 1 credit)
6402	Provide resuscitation Level 2 (Level 1, 1 credit)

Schools should ideally be accredited to deliver and assess the bottom unit standards. To apply for accreditation, schools should contact NZQA.  If not accredited for the electrical units ESITO can organise a MOU and the details of an ESITO assessor who will assess these for the school.
